Preferable Purchasing Policy
Introduction
10DAYS recognizes the impact that its procurement decisions have on the environment. As a responsible corporate citizen, 10DAYS wants to ensure that its procurement practices align with the company's mission, minimizing the environmental footprint and promoting sustainability.
This document outlines our commitment towards sustainability on materials, products and processes. It is designed to promote sustainability, reduce waste, and encourage the use of eco-friendly products and services.
Scope
This guide concerns all procurement activities of both commercial and non-commercial goods and services and equipment. In addition, we encourage our employees to consider this policy when engaging in personal purchasing decisions.
1. Priorities
To ensure the selection of the most sustainable option, it is crucial to take into account all factors outlined in this document when making a procurement decision. Neglecting any of the factors presented in this document may result in an inaccurate assessment of the total impact of a product or service.
Climate: We are supporting the global goal to limit temperature increase to 1.5°C, and support this by producing in Europe and using materials with a lower environmental impact.
Water: We acknowledge the significance of water as a limited resource, essential for survival. We aim to have a positive impact on water by seeking reduction of water use in the production phase.
Biodiversity: We are committed to prevent and reduce our overall impact on the biodiversity and natural ecosystems affected by our value chain, by producing in Europe and using materials with a lower environmental impact.
Chemicals: We follow the Modint Restricted Substances List for all commercial products and aim for non-commercial products to be safe and free from hazardous chemicals.
Circularity: We follow the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) definition of a circular economy: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials at their highest value, and regenerate nature.
Waste: We aim to reduce waste in general, and product waste in particular. Our aim is to contribute to the circular economy by following a waste hierarchy, where prevention is the preferred option, followed by recirculating waste at its highest value through reuse, recycling and repair.
Materials: we use natural resources for a large part of the raw materials in our products, and are committed to reduce the impact of these materials by using a growing share of more sustainable materials for both commercial as non-commercial products, as well as more sustainable options for services.
Animal Welfare: we are committed to make sure that no animals should be harmed in the making of our products. We aim to have only certified animal materials to reduce the risk of animal harm further down the supply chain.
2. Necessity of the purchase
We evaluate whether a product or service is essential to achieving our business objectives. If it is not, we reconsider the purchase altogether.
3. Ownership & Condition
We determine the expected time period of which the product or service will be used. If it's a short-term purchase, we consider renting or leasing the product rather than buying it, as this can help reduce unnecessary waste and resource consumption. If ownership of the product is necessary, we consider whether a used product would suffice instead of purchasing a new one, next to the below listed considerations.
4. Goods, services, and equipment with a low environmental and/or social impact
10DAYS recognizes materials that have a low use of water, chemicals and/or energy in production compared to the mainstream alternatives as sustainable. Credible evidence of this lower environmental impact compared to the mainstream alternative should be available.
Commercial:
· Organically grown materials, responsibly sourced animal fibers, recycled materials, materials produced in a closed-loop factory, materials grown in a way that reduces stress on the environment and improves the livelihoods and welfare of (farming) communities.
· Materials that need little to no water, chemicals and/or energy to grow and process, such as linen and hemp.
· Sustainable finishings such as laser finishing, digital printing, Co2 dyeing, Cradle to Cradle designed, and LWG certified leather
· Materials produced from waste
Non-commercial:
· Organic food, preferably biodegradable, vegetarian and or vegan
· Locally sourced inputs and materials
· Recycled plastic and paper packaging, and stationary materials.
· FSC and PEFC certified paper and cardboard and wood.
· Co2 neutrally produced materials and products
· Nordic Swan certified products
· EU Flower certified products
· Renewable materials, such as renewable energy
· Emitting less Co2, or Co2 neutral products, such as an electric fleet.
· Fairtrade certified products.
· Materials produced from waste
5. Circular goods and equipment, or made with circular materials
10DAYS prefers materials or products that are (partly) reused or recycled.
Commercial 1:
· Left-over fabrics 2
· Cutting waste
· Recycled fabrics and yarns
· Reuse 10DAYS old stock articles
· Selling second-hand articles
Non-commercial:
· Preventing or reducing waste at consumer level by offering circular options (10DAYS for Good)
· Reduce food waste in our offices
· Reuse of existing equipment, or use of secondhand materials where possible to furnish the offices and shops
6. Goods and equipment which are NOT allowed to be purchased in any product
There are materials, processes and claims that cannot be used entirely:
-
Banned materials as listed in the 10DAYS Code of Conduct
-
Vegan claim on any material for commercial use that is not a sustainable replacement for the animal material.
-
Plastic products for single use made from virgin raw materials.
Notes:
1 Materials for commercial use that are reused or recycled should keep the high quality of the primary materials, and the materials should comply with the 10DAYS quality requirements and RSL. Credible evidence of the use of recycled materials should be submitted.
2 Goods produced for an outlet store may only be produced from left-over fabrics from previous seasons. We do not consider these products to be a more sustainable option.
